Our Intro to Whitewater Canoeing Course is designed for individuals with little or no experience, as well as those who have not received formal training in whitewater techniques. When it comes to running white water here at Mahoosuc we don’t “hit the rapids” or “crush it”. We don’t wrestle with the river, but rather work with the river currents to maneuver the canoe. We like to refer to it as a “river dance”. Learning the steps in the dance involves understanding the currents and features of white water and using the proper strokes to maneuver the canoe. This course is taught by a Master Maine Guide and former ACA white water instructor trainer. Participation will equip you with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to embark on your own whitewater canoeing adventures safely. Participants are asked to arrive by 7 p.m. Friday, and the course includes lodging and paddling equipment but not meals (you will have access to a full kitchen for your meal prep). The curriculum covers a range of topics, such as canoe design and handling properties, whitewater strokes, equipment, safety, self-rescue, group management, throw bag use, river hazards, river reading and scouting, paddle signals, and essential maneuvers like eddy turns, peel outs, ferries, side slips, and surfing.
The Whitewater Canoeing Course course begins with participants arriving by 7 p.m. on Friday, ready for an action-packed weekend of learning and fun. Lodging is included in the course price, ensuring a comfortable stay for the duration of your training. While meals are not provided, participants will have access to a fully equipped kitchen for meal preparation, allowing them to enjoy their preferred dishes and accommodate any dietary restrictions.
Throughout the Whitewater Canoeing Course, all necessary paddling equipment will be provided, including canoes, paddles, personal flotation devices (PFDs), and throw bags. Our guides will help you understand the purpose and proper use of each piece of equipment and offer advice on selecting the most suitable gear for your needs and goals.
The course schedule is designed to maximize your learning experience, with ample time for theoretical instruction and hands-on practice. Our skilled instructors will lead you through each subject, guaranteeing a solid grasp of the core principles of the Whitewater Canoeing Course.
The curriculum for this course is progressive and sequential. We start on flat water, then moving water, then on to Class 1 & 2 rapids.
Paddling white water involves three important principles:
1. Ability to read/understand rapids and current differentials and use the river to maneuver the canoe.
2. Ability to timely execute the proper strokes (these are the “dance steps”).
3. Using proper balanced boat lean when executing river maneuvers.
You will learn to blend/modify strokes you may never have heard of such as pivot brace, slice J or reverse sweeping low brace. There will be ample time to practice, practice, practice before moving into the next level of river difficulty.
Safety is of utmost importance when venturing into whitewater environments. Our course will cover essential equipment like PFDs, throw bags, and paddles, as well as dry and flotation bags to protect your belongings and aid in buoyancy. Instructors will emphasize the importance of proper equipment maintenance, fitting, and usage, as well as general safety guidelines and precautions. By the end of the Whitewater Canoeing Course, you’ll have the knowledge and tools necessary to embark on your whitewater canoeing adventures with confidence and a strong focus on safety.
