Both Polly and Kevin taught canoeing workshops at the Maine Canoe Symposium in Bryant Pond, Polly teaching “Women in the Stern” and “Skill Building for Women” and Kevin “Improving Your J Stroke” and “Five Most Important White Water Strokes”.
Kevin’s canoe trip on the St John (Wolastoq) river ended up going on to the Allagash River since there was historically low water on the St John. Everyone adapted to the last minute change and had a great time! The following week Polly guided a trip on the Allagash River. This group was particularly light hearted and we all had MANY laughs as we made our way down the river! Polly was thrilled to have her nephew Matthew on the trip who experienced many new things! A video was made about this trip, click here, to view it!
It is with great sadness that we are experiencing the loss of one of our past apprentices and helpers Janell Marotta. She worked here a lot during her high school years while attending the local private high school, Gould Academy, and then for many years after she would help off and on when in the area. Janell adopted one of our dogs, Millie, who preferred to be a pet rather than a sled dog. She moved to Colorado where she started her own business, Jems Pack, teaching dog obedience training and successfully helped many people with their pets. Here is a video that Janell made a few years ago about her time at Mahoosuc.
Polly and apprentice Maddie just returned from helping with a staff training for She Summits Company who conduct trips for girls and women. We did an overnight canoe trip to Sugar Island with some of our Penobscot friends and guides.
OCTOBER:

Hope you are enjoying the coming of summer and all the abundance it has to offer!

I have been guiding on the Allagash river since 1974 and over the years I’ve seen a distinct pattern in terms of usage. Canoeists must use designated campsites on the waterway and there is no reservation system. In peak periods if paddlers don’t secure a campsite by mid-day or shortly thereafter, they may end up […]
We were able to do our canoe trips later this year as the weather has been unusually warm and beautiful! Here in the Bear River Valley our fall colors are past peak and the leaves are starting to fall. Temperatures remain very comfortable to do outside projects. There is a chill in the air at […]
Siobhan went to doggy heaven today. She was one of Kevin’s dogs and always up for anything. She loved people and children and whenever anyone came to visit the kennel she always thought they came to see her! She ran in any position in the team and was versatile sometimes going with Polly’s teams if […]
My time with you these past weeks has meant a lot to me. I am so grateful for all the bush wisdom and world wisdom you both embody and I feel blessed to have received some part of what you have to offer. I feel myself at a critical life junction and I felt the quality of returning to my roots with you. I don’t know what direction my life will take, but I know I will always cherish what I have learned from you and cherish who you are and what you represent.
