Summer is Winding Down
There hasn’t been any slowing down here at Mahoosuc despite the rainy weather we experienced this summer. People have been having a great time on the water and in the woods!

Kevin has guided a couple trips on the East Branch of the Penobscot river through the newly formed Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument. This is one of Kevin’s favorite rivers in Maine with it’s beauty and challenges of the rapids and portages around spectacular waterfalls and drops. He also taught a weekend white water clinic on the Androscoggin River by Errol, New Hampshire in July.
Polly has guided a Women’s Canoe & Yoga weekend to Umbagog Lake with yoga instructor Christine Trefethen, a West Branch of the Penobscot River trip for the Nature Conservancy, a Women’s Canoe Trip and Native Plant study in the Grand Lake Stream area ending with a stay at Weatherby’s Sporting Camp and the Grand Lake Stream folk festival. Everyone had a good time and were always brought closer together by any challenging weather that came our way.
In August we did one of our Way of the Wabanaki trips and have one more this season September 14-17th with room for a few more people. These are very much authentic cultural trips with the Penobscot of Indian Island and the surrounding area.
Click here to view a video made by a 14 year old participant of our Allagash River trip in late June of this year, good job Theo! This was a fun group of family and friends who enjoyed singing and did some dancing on the river too!
Polly took her annual horseback riding holiday to the Bob Marshall wilderness area in Montana in July and as always fell in love with her horse, this time a large part Percheron part Pinto named Cisco. The outfitter, 7 Lazy P, did a great job tending to all of the clients and had a nice string of horses and pack mules.
We have had a couple nice mentions lately to help spread the word about Mahoosuc Guide Service from publication Roaming the Americas recommending our Way of the Wabanaki trips as one of the top 11 things to do in Maine and Katy Kelliher’s new book.
We are hosting another Wilderness First Aid course October 20-21st and an Open Recertification course October 20-22nd with Jon Tierney from Wilderness Medical Associates. Contact us to register.
Hope you are enjoying the end of summer and beginning of fall!
Polly, Kevin & all the doggies
I have been guiding on the Allagash river since 1974 and over the years I’ve seen a distinct pattern in terms of usage. Canoeists must use designated campsites on the waterway and there is no reservation system. In peak periods if paddlers don’t secure a campsite by mid-day or shortly thereafter, they may end up […]
We were able to do our canoe trips later this year as the weather has been unusually warm and beautiful! Here in the Bear River Valley our fall colors are past peak and the leaves are starting to fall. Temperatures remain very comfortable to do outside projects. There is a chill in the air at […]
Siobhan went to doggy heaven today. She was one of Kevin’s dogs and always up for anything. She loved people and children and whenever anyone came to visit the kennel she always thought they came to see her! She ran in any position in the team and was versatile sometimes going with Polly’s teams if […]
I do not have enough words to thank you. You have given such good attention and care throughout this entire weekend. I am so thankful that both days you tied my laces on my snowshoes. That made the whole day comfortable. When we were relaxing in the cook tent you went and started the fire in our tent. And first thing in the morning I see you again starting the fire so we can get ready comfortably!! You have worked very hard almost every minute of the day. You are amazingly organized, composed, efficient, diligent, soft spoken, kind, effective, detail oriented, attentive, punctual and a very very disciplined person. Dog sledding experience is unique. I was comfortable all the time because of your and Carolyn’s kind consideration. Your staff is very respectful and attentive to every one.
