Guided Wilderness Canoe Trips in Maine & Canada

Maine has a variety of wilderness canoe trips on rivers such as the Allagash, the St. John, and the East and West Branches of the Penobscot. These rivers provide the best moose viewing opportunities and wildlife watching in the state.

 

We offer guided wilderness canoe trips on Maine rivers such as the Allagash, St. John, and the East and West Branches of the Penobscot. These rivers provide the best moose-viewing opportunities and wildlife watching in the state.

All our Maine canoe trips are fully outfitted and guided by Mahoosuc Guide Service’s owners. Polly & Kevin are full time year round professional wilderness guides. There are two guides and usually an apprentice on every trip.

On our overnight canoe trips in Maine, we take more time to paddle a given stretch of river than most other guide services to allow for swimming, natural history exploration, fishing, or just good old relaxing. We also provide transportation to and from the river and cover all camping and road use fees. Many of our canoe trips require no special physical conditioning. SAFETY: Mahoosuc Guide Services has an exceptional safety record. Polly is certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR and Kevin is Wilderness First Responder and CPR certified. Both are former ACA Whitewater Instructors or Whitewater Instructor Trainers. MGS regularly offers guide training for guides to improve their skills, judgement, and safety.

EXPERIENCE:  This year (2024) we celebrate 34 years of service. Before founding Mahoosuc Guide Services, Polly and Kevin spent part of their lives guiding and living in the far north from Arctic Canada to the Yukon Territory and Alaska.

MASTER GUIDES:  Polly and Kevin are both Master Maine Guides, the highest level recognized by the State of Maine with 34 and 44 years of experience. Both have served on the Maine Guides Oral exam board which conducts the testing of new guide candidates.

OPTIONS:  We offer trips for any experience level, and many of our trips require no prior experience and are family friendly for all ages. We are also available to do custom trips for organizations or family groups.

WE CARE:  We have resisted the urge to become big. This means all of our trips are owner-guided by Polly or Kevin. We hire guides and apprentices to assist us as we always have a minimum of two guides and usually an apprentice per trip.

TRADITION:  We believe in continuing the time-honored tradition and heritage of the Maine Guide by making much of our own gear including canoes, paddles, dogsleds, snowshoes, toboggans, and wannigans.
